a christmas gift, from me to you X

Whether you believe the birth of Jesus is truth or myth, this is one children’s book you should own – especially at Christmas. (Actually, the illustrations alone make it a very worthy purchase!) It moved my heart so deeply the first time I read it that I would love your family to have one this Christmas, also.
I’ve asked my friend Anna to share her initial thoughts as she reads this book to her children this Christmas for the first time:
………………………………….

Hi to all of Dee's lovely readers. My name is Anna and Dee has asked me to do a guest post on her blog because she is giving away a book that I just happened to have bought for my own kids a few weeks ago.  It's called: "The Jesus Storybook Bible- every story whispers his name" by Sally Lloyd Jones. My kids LOVE it and it is brilliant in the way it tells the stories of the Bible as one big Story.
A story where at the centre, there is a baby, the child on whom everything would depend.

I read about this book on another blog and I thought it would be good to use as our advent calendar leading up to Christmas so we could see how every story in the Bible - from Noah, to Moses, to King David - leads to the birth of Jesus.
In this book Jesus is like the missing piece in a puzzle- the piece that makes all the other pieces fit together.

So I bought it for the kids, but I didn't realise how much I would get out of it too. As I read, 33 years of stories, sermons and knowledge that was in my head made their way to my soul and I. got. it.
My eyes filled with tears as I read about Adam and Eve been sent from the garden and how that broke God's heart because that was not what he wanted for us. But that wasn't the end… [quote]

God loved his children too much to let the story end there, Even thought he knew he would suffer, God had a plan- a magnificent dream. One day, he would get his children back. One day, he would make the world their perfect home again. And one day, he would wipe away every tear from their eyes.

You see, no matter what, in spite of everything, God would love his children- with a Never Stopping, Never Giving up, Unbreaking, Always and Forever Love. And though they would forget him, and run from him, deep in their hearts, God's children would miss him always and long for him- lost children yearning for their home.

Before they left the garden, God whispered a promise to Adam and Eve: "It will not always be so! I will come to rescue you! And when I do, I'm going to do battle against the snake. I'll get rid of the sin and the dark and the sadness you let in here. I'm coming back for you!" And he would. One day, God himself would come.

And as I looked up with my blurry, tear-filled eyes and saw my children in their bunks, hanging off every word, spellbound by the story and seeing it all click into place in their brains like it had mine - that this was what Christmas was all about.
This was the reason Jesus was born 2000 odd years ago. Click click click suddenly it all makes sense.

If you own this book you'll know what I'm talking about. If you don't have it then you should get it, and then get more to give away as the lovely Dee is doing.  The way it is written and the illustrations are wonderful for the little ones and the not so little (wink).

  1. The illustrations are gorgeous.. even though my partner has a largely agnostic view and I am sitting on the fence about "god' we take our children to church.. Our 4year old is in no doubt about Jesus and her passion is shining through already - something I want to encourage her to grow :)

    Merry Christmas

  2. This looks gorgeous Dee, I am happy to buy myself a copy so someone else can have this one free. I learn a lot from children's books. I think we're wired to learn when we engage with the story - hence the use of parables. :o) Merry Christmas to you and yours

  8. Wow, sounds fantastic! I'd love to win it, but I'm wondering if I can wait until Christmas Eve - as much as I'm avoiding the shops I might see if I can hunt a copy down so we can read some with the kids over the final lead-up to Christmas.

  9. I am really inspired together with your writing talents as neatly as with the structure
on your weblog. Is that this a paid subject or did you modify it
yourself? Anyway keep up the nice high quality writing, it is uncommon to see
a nice blog like this one nowadays..
Look at my web blog ; life like dolls

  10. Oh dear - you've got a few spammers here Dee :-(.

That book sounds A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! I bought a couple of Christmas books this year, our 2 year old is at the age we want to really start to impart the true meaning of Christmas... but to be honest, they were rather mediocre; we were both rather disappointed. So this sounds awesome (I seriously did not do well this year - bought two new Christmas CD's that were rather dreary also, doh)!!!!!

  18. I love this book, I read it to my little one all the time! She is too young to understand the story, but she looks at the pictures and I think that she understand more than people think. I love how every story points back to Jesus.

  20. What a beautiful looking book. I really try and remind my children the reason why we celebrate Christmas each year, that its not about the gift receiving, but about the wonderful gift that God has given us :) Thanks for the the awesome review. I'll be seeking this book out in the holidays.

  24. Hi!

You have no idea how long I've been looking for this book. We saw it a few years ago at a book stall during a conference. The search had been on for such a long time for a children's bible that had been well WRITTEN. It seems ridiculous but I had almost given up. We found this book, didn't have the funds to buy it at the time, and put it on the need to buy it later list. Some years later I'd forgotten its name and author, until reading this post. Plus also, this is my "Introduce myself" comment, I'm new here. (Came through Rhiannon and also from being a facebook 'liker' of your stuff!). I've just spent the last week going chronologically through your blog and getting to know you :) Is that weird and stalker-y? Have been inspired, entertained, amazed and challenged. I have 3 kids, 10, 8 and 1 (2 boys 1 girl) and live in the amazing town of Ohope. I had originally planned to get all the way up to date before I stepped into the light and introduced myself but couldn't not thank you for putting this book back in front of my face.

    Thank you thank you :)
