i wonder...

as you turn left at Awanui onto SH10 there is a small straight stretch of road with a collection of delightful ramshackle houses all clustered together.
ooohh, i do love old ramshackle houses!
i imagine little bare feet running in through the front doors and a mama calling out "don't slam the doors!".
i imagine a papa repainting the weatherboards on his weekends.
i notice the water tanks, the small orchard of fruit trees and the remains of decorative garden beds.
i wonder who lived here; who kept the fires burning in winter, and hung out the laundry in summer.
i wonder what they looked like. and if they were happy.
mostly, i wonder why these houses are all here, together, in this spot.
aren't they a fascinating collection?

  1. I've taken lots of photos of these, my dad's road is off this main highway. The bottom one especially makes me wonder about when it was abandoned and why and who lived there. Seems sad that they weren't maintained.

  2. Those disintegrating buildings always make me a little sad, for such a long time they were happy places, places where families grew up and now they've been abandoned for something newer.
I always see what they could have been if taken care of and if they still have a family living in them.

  3. I recognise these. We were holidaying in the far North over Christmas. Funny to think that these little houses were busy households once upon a time........

  4. Oh, I adore these houses and the surrounding landscape. My heart aches that they have been abandoned.

  8. There is a childrens book we had as kids that my kids now read called 'Come by Chance'. We love spotting come by chances when we are travelling!

  9. It's a bit sad seeing them unloved and neglected.
Driving through the countryside here you see old cottages like this too (the stone ones are amazing). Makes you want to buy them and restore them.

  10. Lovely group of houses... the thing I noticed right off is that they all seem to have the exact same windows, or is it just me? Great pictures!
