50/52 {A Family Portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week, in 2013}

Celebration Season is upon us, and our Danny Arlo is now 4!!
His cake was all about maximum impact and minimum effort. It totally worked :)
Within the next 9 weeks we have 7 birthdays, a Christmas, a New Year, and a wedding anniversary! Phew!

49/52 {A Weekly Family Portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week, in 2013}

After eating tasteless, floury cool store apples for the last few months, we sure are enjoying scoffing our faces with fresh peaches, plums and apricots from our orchard. So sweet and juicy!
Our orchard is still young, so we don't have gluts but there is enough for at least one each of everything every day at the moment.

After I took this pic, I announced to the fam that they would only have to endure a few more weekly family portraits. I expected to be met with whoops and fist pumps and high fives, but they actually seemed a little disappointed!! I guess it's kinda become our "thing"....

48/52 {A Weekly Family Portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week, in 2013}

This week's portrait turned out to be quite symbolic. Initially I imagined it as a way of documenting JR's healing, but over the course of the week it has come to represent a simultaneous personal healing we are beginning to experience.
Equally as painful and slow, equally as necessary.
We are so eager for the freedoms that the completion of both healings will bring - physical, emotional and spiritual. It's been a hard couple of years.
Maybe one day I will share it all with you ...
xx

47/52 {A Weekly Family Portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week in 2013}

Look who's on his feet!!
Actually he's often on his feet. Either that, or in bed. No sitting allowed!
I quickly snapped this on Wednesday afternoon when all the kids were out doing their own thing. Jada has recently finished reading the Jannette Oke Love Comes Softly series again, so is revisiting her prairie-girl dress ups. Sawyer ALWAYS has one gumboot on - usually on the wrong foot! And he sure loves his earmuffs.
Oh, and this is a new space we made on our deck. We got rid of our broken bbq and moved some of our extensive collection of rescued chairs out.  It's smothered in morning sun - perfect for some fresh honey on toast and coffee before I rip into my mammoth days.

How have you been?!

PS Bonus points if you spotted Huckle.

46/52 {A weekly family portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week in 2013}

Bedtime story in Dad's bed.

JR is still spending most of his time laying down - which makes his bed a fairly busy, communal area throughout the day with lots of little visitors popping in and out.
And as much as we're all itching for him to get up and about again, I have a feeling even these (mostly) bed-ridden days, with their unexpected moments of joy, will be missed.

(I realise I'm not in this picture, but it was a sweet moment and it would've been ruined if I'd tried to squeeze into it. We'll just let it slide this week, k?)

Weeks 43-45 - A weekly family portrait

Oh hi! Thanks for stopping by, please excuse the cobwebs....

WEEK 43//
Spinal surgery support team

WEEK 44//
This is the first week all year we actually didn't get a photo together. It went all horribly pear-shaped (which is rather unfair to a pear, really...) - JR returned to hospital for 5 nights with an abscessed wound and 3 kids came down with a hearty dose of chicken pox so we had an enforced (intense!) separation from each other.
All I have are some Instagram snaps of the haze that was week #44...

WEEK 45//
Things have mostly settled into a new daily routine. (I was going to say rhythm, but it feels more like the busy buzz of a blow-fly!). I was in charge of changing the dressing this weekend so we took the chance to snap some pics of JR's fierce wound and stitches.
Danny looks dubious about my shenanigans, but to be honest it's been such a stressful couple of weeks, it felt real nice to be joking about it at last.

42/52 {A weekly family portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week, in 2013}

This morning, instead of church, we were out walking in the fresh air, far away from other small humans because there are some among us who have chicken pox!!
Yep, a lovely back-to-reality jolt for me after a lovely few days swanning about at hotels and sunshine-y beaches in Australia.
Because our fam was separated last weekend, this is the closest I have to a family photo for week 41 - a dodgey phone photo at the airport, before Jada and I left...

Only 10 weeks left in this year!!!

38/52 {A weekly family portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week, in 2013}

It was only a matter of time before I had to throw a smoochy one in...heh. ;)
I'm only disappointed you can't see more of Ty and Monte. They were all up on the table dancing up (kids gone wild?) and some of the other shots were hilarious.

{37/52} A Weekly Family Portrait

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week, in 2013}

I couldn't decide which one! In the first one, I kinda adore how Danny is standing so perfectly, how my fingers are sinking into Sawyer's fat thigh, and how Huckle is jumping into Ty's face (again!).
But I like the balance in the second.

There are signs of spring every where at the moment, but the poplars behind our house still don't have leaves. if we could afford it, we'd cut them down - they're SO big and creaky!!
Also, I've been working hard to reclaim our gardens after a year of pregnancy followed by a year up north. They pretty much looked like a weedy extension of our lawn! Oh, dear...

32 & 33/52 {A Weekly Family Portrait} + a review

I missed week 32, so seeing as I'm playing catch-up anyway, I thought I'd review our portraits so far this year (not in perfect order, but near enough)

 I look at these and I can see some blissfully wonderful times and some hard, dark, dark times (almost too difficult to look at) but we are all here, all doing this year, this life, together. And that makes me so thankful to have stuck at keeping this weekly record. It really is our story of 2013.

Week 32
We keep coming back to the beach.

Week 33
(Extra points if you can see Huckle Dog!)

I guess, what I've realised is that you guys only see the weekly image but I see the story/events surrounding around each image.
For example, you might look at this and think we're a completely morbid bunch! You wouldn't be far off, but what I would see is kids who have spent 2 and a half hours at a funeral, then the supermarket, then driven home holding the groceries on their knees because we forgot to take the stroller out of the boot, then bribed with a lolly to take a family photo.
I would know my heart is remembering the Aunty, (who's funeral we'd just been to), who had done a fabulous job of raising four boys on her own, and thinking of my own four boys and the mother I'd like to be to them.

31/52 {A Weekly Family Portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week in 2013}

This is what a terribly mis-timed self-timer shot looks like.
We all had toitoi spears that we'd been throwing from the sand dunes and tried to time it for the photo, but we were too far from the camera and couldn't hear the warning beeps. It was kinda funny and we couldn't be bothered trying a second attempt.
I like it like this anyhow, and the fact that I look like I'm doing the chicken dance is just a bonus ;)

30/52 {A Weekly Family Portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week, in 2013}

I know there is a lot more cold weather still to come, but there was a definite sense of spring in the air today.
We couldn't resist the beautiful late afternoon light and we all ended up outside enjoying it - JR giving motorbike rides, me pruning some hydrangeas so I can move them, Huckle chewing some of the smaller grapevines [insert a lot of expletive muttering at how much non-food items a puppy eats!].
It was pretty nice to feel like we're on the home run to long, sunny days again.

29/52 {A Weekly Family Portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week, in 2013}

This tradition of having a 'Sibling Sleepover' every school holidays happened purely by accident. (Or, more accurately, my lack of energy at having real friends stay for a sleepover!) But it's a firm family favourite now, with mattresses, sleeping bags, torches and a late movie.

28/52 {A Weekly Family Portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week, in 2013}

Besides today (Sunday), we haven't seen JR in daylight hours all week. He's left for work in the dark and come home in the dark. So, I'm cheating a little by using another photo I took of us on this day from last week's 52 project. (We're all in this picture - just! Can you find everyone?)
Right as I took this photo, someone dropped a plate and smashed it in the cafe kitchen - all heads suddenly turned to stare at the drop-ee!

27/52 {A Weekly Family Portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week, in 2013}

JR has been doing some building lately and, while it's lovely to have some relief from unemployment, it's meant 11 hour working days and only seeing the kids for a brief hour over dinner and before bed. So, when he text to ask if we could meet him at the lake in town for a coffee, we dropped the school books and jumped at the chance. The kids had a great (brief) time hanging out with Dad, feeding the ducks and playing on the massive playground.
(When we arrived, the day suddenly got really dark and cold and I had to edit the snot out of this photo to make us visible. I think I did a bad job, sorry if it makes anyone cringe!)

26/52 {A Weekly Family Portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week, in 2013}

This week's family portrait almost almost didn't happen. We are all often together, but not often in the same frame.
I try to take our portaits when opportunity allows and this after-dinner game of Junior Cluedo was perfect.

25/52 {A Weekly Family Portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week, in 2013}

This is pretty much us these wintry days.
Lots of couch + quilt time.
Lots of doll-making (me) + doll-rating (them)*.
Yeap, pretty much us.

I seriously need to get motivated and inspired for these weekly photos. Off to pinch ideas off Pinterest...

24/52 {A Weekly Family Portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week, in 2013}

A few weeks ago, JR started his own ginger beer plant and this is our first tasting. It was so good.
Also, hurrah! I'm so excited! The self-timer finally caught a candid moment! (It only took half a year!)
Ok, a lot of exclamation marks, but seriously, look at that face!! Gimme tha ginger beer, sister~~!

22/52 {A Weekly Family Portrait}

{A portrait of our family, once a week, every week, in 2013}

 Yesterday afternoon JR whipped up some soccer goal posts, and seeing as we pretty much have an instant team we thought we'd try them out even though it was getting dark and cold.
For the longest time I dreamed of having a house with verandah that looked over a large front lawn where I could sit and watch my people play sport. I'll be honest and say I am looking forward to Sawyer getting a bit bigger so I can be relieved of goalie duty and go back to my more relaxing vantage point on the verandah!
